Dental Assistant Training
What training is required of a dental assistant? While many assistants today learned their skills on the job, an increasing amount of those who are trained as dental assistants are going to community colleges and junior colleges as well as trade schools, technical institutes, or the armed forces. to get their dental assistant training.
If you are currently in high school, and want to pursue a career as a dental assistant, you should be taking courses in biology, chemistry, health, and office practices. Some college courses require a science or computer related background admission. Most technical trade school programs take one year or less to complete. This one-year course will lead to a certificate or a diploma. However if you wish to achieve an Associates degree in dental assistant training, you will need to take a two-year program offered at a community or a junior college. All college programs require a high school diploma or its equivalent. There are a number of vocational schools that offer 4 to 6 month courses for dental assistant training, however the commission on dental accreditation does not accredit these programs.
On The Job Training:
If you wish to learn the role of a dental assistant through on-the-job training, often times the dentistry were working for will teach you dental terminology, the names of the instruments, how to perform daily duties, how to interact with patients, and all other necessary things to know to keep a dental office running. Some of these tasks can be picked up quite easily, while other tasks may take a few months before you as a new dental assistants are completely knowledgeable about their duties and can complete them without assistance.
This on-the-job training, is still required for those who have completed a dental assistant program or even have some previous experience as a dental assistant. Each dentist office may have its own style of doing things, therefore they will teach you their way and get you comfortable working with them. Remember that dental technology changes quite often, so dental assistants will need to stay up-to-date and familiar with the new tools and procedures that are being used.
